Obsidian for The Uni

uni-obsi.svg

(And I still can't draw)

A lot of people use Obsidian as their personal knowledge management system, but default to Office 365 or LibreOffice for writing documents (e.g., reports, courseworks, etc.) and doing math when their research requires that. I wanted a single system that could do everything, and I've compiled the things I found into this document.

Why would you want a single system?

  1. You don't have to think about formatting when writing the document
  2. Writing equations in most office suites is not that fun, especially if you have to hunt for greek characters through multiple menus
  3. You get the ability to link to parts of a report / coursework, integrating it with your PKM
  4. Updating technical drawings, equations and tables placed in the documents is easier if they were generated by that document in the first place

Archiving

I've looked at some editors: ru-editor-app.

Typst itself is a better fit for everything mentioned above (except the links), so Obsidian is out. We'll work with a few people at the uni to figure out what the best environment is around typst, but it probably won't be Obsidian. I'll update this note when we figure it out.
